My B has the serial # tag on it but it is an old steel(metal tag) and you can see the JOHN DEERE B and the word Serial but after cleaning I still can't tell the s/n even with good lighting and a magnifiing glass. Is there some where else that I can find the number

I've mentioned this several times and never gotten any feedback about it but it worked for me. I cleaned the tag , got lots of light and magnification ready then dropped on about two drops of acid, I used battery acid because it was handy, the number popped right out at me . I then quickly neutralized it with baking soda/water and recorded the number. Bob

Sometimes you can take a pair of keen nose vise grips and turn the tacks out on the tag and read it from the back side . Good luck

Being steel it is a late 42, 43 or 44.

Steel tags were used in the 50's yet, 51 or 52 A had steel that was too rusted to read

I just checked the tag on my 1952 A it is steel, a magnet will pick it up. My '51 B is not attracted to the magnet. Bob

I just took my old serial number plate into a company called D&D, here in Mason City, Iowa. I could not read the number either. A guy working there looked at it under under a magnifying glass and read me the number. I could not read it with his glass, but he could. Said he had seen worse. D&D will now produce me a serial number plate using .020 anodized aluminum.
