Fixin to paint my other 420 the one without a tag and am wondering if it might be an all green one. My running 420 is a 57 model with a black dash and straight steer. The 57 has the shifter with a bend in it and a boot that is like my M and MT. but the one i'm painting has a "gate" type with a stumpy shifter handle and a large knob on top. without a tag what should i look for to tell if it was all green. The paint job she came with was not the traditional green/w yellow stripe. It had the stripe on the hood but it was white and no white on the nose where the yellow should have been. And since it has no tag i guess i could just paint it all green. I will be alot easier to paint that way but i would like to do it as close to original as possible . Thanks for the help as always

That gated shifter could of been put on at anytime as they had a service bulletin on using these to replace the old style shifters even on the model 40. It's your tractor paint it how you want it.Without a tag nowadays it will be only of interest to someone who wants a tractor to use and valued compared to that of the 8N buyers.

Can you tell where the tag might have been originally? The 56 models had the tag on the left side of the center frame, about half-way back. The later models had the tag mounted at about 10 o"clock on the bell housing.

I agree that the yellow paint probably faded white over the years. I can see where my 57 is starting to look white.

The gate type shifter was used on some 56 models, 420S was one of them, if its a 56 model it should be all green. Does it have a 4 spd or 5 spd? does it have power steering? Internal or external brakes?

I'll vote for putting the yellow stripe on it. The parts book says the gated shifter was introduced at serial number 108922. Since the serial numbers for the 1957 model year began at 100001, that means the tractor is either a 1957 or 1958 model, both of which would have the yellow stripe.

You don't say if the steering wheel is vertical or slanted. If it has a slanted steering wheel, that would indicate a 1958 model. (There are a couple of exceptions where 1958 models had vertical steering wheels.)

My guess is that white stripe started off yellow forty-five-plus years ago and has faded over time.

Over the years, parts got changed on those tractors, such as center frames, shifter covers, ect.
But I have a 56 model with the corresponding serial tag and it has a 4 speed with the gate type shifter. So I would say you have a 56 model.
