I have a JD 2020 that I bought three years ago and have struggled with the tractor bubbling coolant since I bought it. If the temperatue guage is correct the tractor is not running hot. I tore it apart this winter and there were only two holes at the rear of the block for coolant. The head and head gasket had 5 extra holes all toward the front of the tractor. Could the block not being drilled be causing this problem?

also you said if the coolant temp guage is corerct tahts a huge if. i have seen them where the farmer says "its ok it works" and sticking a mechanical guage in there showed 15 degrees difference between actual and their dash. i recommend whole heartly to go get an infared thermometer. that is a super tool with diesels. you can use it to see how hot its getting and down the road when shes missing it works there too. sometimes some of those injector lines are a sob to get to and if the motor is cold (before the heat dissapates and makes the whole thing read the same temp) you can usually point the lazer infared at the exhaust manifold port for each cylinder and usally one will be real cold. real handy if a couple are real hard to get to instead of cracking them and guessing etc can real quick point to each one and the colder one shows up bamn now you can start checking other things but gets you in the right direction real quick

i may be reading this wrong but to me he is saying that he bubbles or boils the coolant. this could be caused by a radiator cap. the reason the tracotr doesnt overheat but still get boiling off is the heat is causeing the antifreeze to boil so it is still dispating the heat until no coolant is left. he never said that the coolant had oil in it. ususally not always but you have to figure the cooling system on that tractor is running 12-15psi oil pressure probably around 40 the oil should go into the coolant or if its a ring around the bottom of the sleeve it may go the other way when sitting but he never said the coolant had oil in it or the oil was milky. i may be reading it wrong but to me he is jsut boiling off coolant. if that is the case i would check the radiator cap is tight and works. i have known alot alot alot alot of guys who get a pin hole leak in a radiator or something and to get the work done they dont take the cap off but loosen it so it doesnt seat and build pressure and alot of times it doesnt leak anymore so it doesnt get fixed.

I found a sleeve on a 2020 once that was cracked around the flange at the top of the cylinder. You need to make an adapter to go in the spark plug hole or injector hole so you can apply air pressure to the cylinders one at a time, wth the engine set so the valves are closed on the cylinder you are checking. Taking off the rocker arms also closes all the valves. Look for bubbles in the radiator as you put air to each cylinder.

Jon. did you have the head magnafluxed for cracks? How much coolant are you loosing? Do you have white smoke, and an antifreeze odor on startup?

You likely have pitted sleeves, allowing combustion products to enter the cooling system.

As far as the gasket matching all the holes in the block and head, most don't. Some of the holes are simply left over from the mold cores in the casting process, and are not used for coolant flow, so the gasket blocks them off.
