How much h.p did this machine have? where they any good, dependable? i do know the 4020-5020 had transmission and rear end troubles. i have seen alot of 5020"s repowered with GM 8V71"s would a 12V71 bw good in a 7020???? or is that over kill...

As previously stated. The only way you can tear the rear end out of a stock HP 5020, that has clean quality lube oil. Is to install duals, fill them with liqid ballast and add cast wheel weights. Then hook on a V-ripper hard pan breaker that's four to six bottoms too large. Then spend many hours lugging the engine to the max in 1st or 2nd gear.

It's painfully obvious you're "not a John Deere guy" as 4020's and 5020's didn't have rear end problems. And since you're not a JD guy, I'd suggest you find some other tractor to butcher by putting a "Detroit" in it.

Where do you get the idea of the 4020/5020 rear end and transmission problems. Thats like saying the Farmall M had rear end problems. The 7020 was rated at 145 PTO hp from its 404 turboed and intercooled engine. It used the same engine, rear ends, and other components found in the smaller JD 2-wheel drive tractors. They either had an 8 sp syncro or 16 speed transmission. The 16 speed was basically the 8 sp with a Hi and Low. One drawback of the 7020 was the PTO was not live.

I herd guys that farmed with 5020's had rearend trouble. like i said im not a jd man but i do like the look of them. i have never owened one due to dealers. there isnt one around me for 100 miles. Case IH hase cleaned up on everything. When i was a kid alot of people had cockshutt, MM,IH,Cat,Massy, there were a few jds. Now everything is caseIH. i would like to buy that 7020 and restor and use it. The detroit repower is out of mind detroit parts are $$$$$. but they are good engines, A guy down the road has a 8V53 in a 1967 kenworth truck thing has millions of miles on it, only runs 2400rpm but he does bag it. He will hold it to the floor untill hes at his location.

I live in Big Sky country were a majority of them 5010/5020s were sold. We currently own a 5010 and 5020. Grandpa farmed with a 5010 and 5020 back in the 60s. Almost every farm around here had a 5020 at one time or another and there are still a lot of them in use. You can break any rear end on a tractor if you dump the chloride and weights on and over load the tractor and I am willing to be more then one 5020 owner did that. If you want to restore and use a 7020 I would leave the original engine in or if you still want to repower it, put in a JD 466. In my opinion, it would be better then the Detriot. If you want to repower just for the "cool" factor then throw in whatever you want. Its a free country.

I've never been around a 7020 but I believe it to have close to 150 hp. with 404 cid. aftercooled and turbocharged.
I am familiar with the 5020's and 4020's and ours have been nearly trouble free especially the transmission. we have a 5020 that I put a 619cid. engine in and set it at over 300 hp. (the pto clutch will only hold to 282 hp.) that was over 20 years ago and 4200 hard hours ago with no trans. problems. The 7020 is the smaller brother to the 7520, it has about 180-190 hp. The engine in the 7020 was a good one. Its the same one they use in the 4020, 4320, 4620 and many newer ones and is one of if not the most popular engine deere built
