Does anybody know what is exactly the correct seat back cushion for an 80? It does not have the steel backed seat frame like the other numbered series tractors. A friend of mine has a late G with the same open type seat frame and his cushion has a steel backing with John Deere written across it. I'm just wondering what was original equipment on this tractor.

The late B used the same seat as the 80 (strange isn't it!!!)

Here are the B part numbers and serial ranges. The 80 has the same part numbers listed.

Seat frame AB3930R (245498- )
Seat Back cushion AB3624R (201000- )

On my 80 there are four bolts that hold the metal back to the seat frame and four screws holding the metal back to the seat cushion itself.

There are probably quite a few suppliers of B seat cushions out there. But I don't know if anyone includes the metal back? That might mean a trip to the junkyard.

The very best seat back that I have found is the one sold by Leyland Schwandt. It's metal backed with nickel plated rivets. All the original Deere backs were made this way, so the letter series metal back was carried over to the number series, you just didn't see the metal when it was covered up.

Now I have two phone numbers for him and I know one is right.....

Frank,

I have purchased cushions from Leyland before. This 80 just doesn't have the sheet metal behind the back cushion like all the other numbered series. I guess I need to call Leyland and see what he has for the 80. The replacement that most people offer is only a wood backed cushion that bolts on and is exposed in the rear. It's not a pretty site. Dad already bought one of these as a gift. He means well but usually worries more about price than being correct.

On the wood backed piece, one time before you could get the correct ones, I attached a cleanly cut piece of painted steel with nickel round headed tacks and it looked pretty presentable.

On other back rests, many are made with two sets of mounting lugs so that they fit both the numbered and lettered styles. I can't remember if the Leyland back rest has two sets or not. I had one years ago that had two sets of lugs, and I carefully removed the lugs that were not needed and bondoed the dings, touched up and covered with the decals. That made it look very nice. Those back rests, BTW, were the ones offered by Deere when they needed a universal type to fit an "A" as well as a '60'.

He also makes the bottoms with the springs in them like the original style these will make it ride better.

Yes! I have one of those as well and they really make a difference on the old posterior.

Only thing I have noticed is that they don't seem to have as good of springs (weaker) then the original seat I still have.
