Is there any reason not to use 15-40 Rotella in my gas 2cyl. J.D. tractors? Thanks much,
John

John, in my estimation the better question would be "is there a good reason not to use a high detergent diesel oil in my tractor?". My answer to that is "no". I use John Deere oil in all my motorized equipment and especially in my antique tractors although Rotella is also known as a very good oil. The service that these tractors see anymore is a classic reason to use the diesel oil, in my opinion. Idling, never getting fully warmed up and off and on running are all good ways to form sludge in an engine. A good quality diesel oil will help alleviate the sludge. The best thing to do for an engine is to "get it clean and keep it clean". Mike

John, years ago when in the trucking business, we ran it in our semis like many others and got good service. I believe its a good quality oil, but even if not, I dont think any particular brand, provuded its anywhere near the correct weight and rating, can make all that much difference in those tractors given the relatively light duty and low hours of use as compared to what they were designed to withstand. Seems like years ago I heard something about GM not recommending 10W 40 in their new cars (said to use 10 w 30) but the tolerances and requiremtnes in the new cars isnt anything what the old Deeres were used to. I dont think any even poor brand of oil can hurt it, so I see no reason NOT to use what you asked. HOWEVER, oil n chemistry, not being electrical, aint my cup o tea.

I use this in all my tractors and has never let me down yet. I do live in the south and if you live where temps are very cold and you use the tractor in the winter you will probally want to run a lighter oil during this time.
