I was wondering what you guys would recommend. If I have 500 dollars to spend on paint and primer, what would you recommend? I am not familar with paint thats why I am asking for input. What works the best, easiet application, easiest prep work, and overall best paint for the price. Thanks

just painted my 49A past summer. first time i ever painted anything other than helping the wife paint the dining room (luckily she won't let me help her paint walls again).used deere's paint & thinner. used diamond vogel's two part epoxy primer. bought an inexpensive hvlp spray gun. left it sit in the shop for a couple weeks after painting to cure a bit, then pulled it out to sit in the sun on nice days until i was pretty sure it was cured. turned out great-easy to work with, not that hazardous, shiney as a new tractor, and didn't cost a ton of cash.
it's a tractor i use all the time around the farmyard pulling gravity wagons, sickle mower, water tanker for sprayer, pulling seed wagon, etc, so i didn't need anything like dupont or ppg top end paints. i bought a 60 last fall and am going to paint it this year after corn and beans are planted (might have time then), and am going to use the same primer and paint.
i just couldn't see putting a fortune in paint and then worry about scratching it up. wife was actually the one that talked me into painting it. now she thinks that i should tackle the old 706 and loader after the 60. will post pictures of the A after i have daughter scan them for me-i've not caught up to technology yet.
my 2 cents.

Best paint for the price. I would have to say the paint your local John Deere dealer sells.

I would use PPG tecstar paint with ALK 201 hardener, this paint has a high gloss and is really priced well, almost looks like base/clearcoat shine out of the gun, plus it is mixed in the can, just add hardener and shoot, the paint dries fast, can handle it in a few hours, although I would not reassemble anything in that time, you can get it inside to finish drying, it has some minor drawbacks as all enamels do, if you mess if up, you cant fix it for a few months till it really cures up, also you cant buff it out like other paints, but it is cheap, about 35.00 per gallon and 12.00 per pint for hardener. I like it and use it alot.
