I am seeking recommendations for a primer to use in the restoration of my '39 "B."

Is there a good product on the market - reasonably priced which is not two-part (activator or catalyst not required)?

I used PPG DP40LF in the restoration of my 1950 "B." Expensive, good "stuff," two-part, relatively short pot life.

Suggestions will be appreciated.

Painting and finishing has been a real stumbling point for me. I know very little about it.

Marvin H. recommended a brand called Iowa Paint, their epoxy primer. The label says IO-POXY Epoxy Ester Primer 18416 which is an industrial gray primer. I have used it on several parts now and applies very well with an gun.

Any comments or experience with this product?

I use the quart sized primer and activator in gray which is numbered 6134/6144.

My paint guy has been trying to get me to try some of their easy sandable, 2 part epoxy, which can serve as a primer, sealer, and high build product, all in one.

Ken, to make any suggestions we really need to know what you are trying to do? If just a sealer before painting then a primer sealer is fine.. If trying to seal in rust that is something else.. If trying to use as a filler, sanding primer, or surfacer then you won�t be happy with a single part primer as it will shrink in time & the defects will start to show through...

What are you trying to do & what are your expectations on the finished job?

I wasnt to thrilled about Deeres buff primer on sheet metal either. Maybe its fine with whatever Deere uses for application equipment. I use PPG primers and seem to have better surfaces for final coats with a lot less work.

I've been using the JD primer on the cast and for my sheet metal I've been using NASON "FULFILL" cheap works good and is easy to wetsand and use spot putty on.

For the castings it's hard to beat that JD buff primer sealer. I don't like it on the sheetmetal it doesn't seem to sand well or work good with spot putty for filling rust pits.

I have been using Transtar brand 2 part epoxy primer, and it performs very well. It runs about half the price of the PPG DP series.
