My 720 PTO clutch slipped under heavy pull the first time I used it after buying it. Can the condition of the disks be told without dissasembly? If you replace disks, do both the drive and driven types need to be replaced? Lyle

Lyle, probably the best way to tell how much slippage you had is to sniff the PTO oil,, if smells considerably burnt those clutch disks are burnt (how much you wont know without disassembly & inspection)..

You ask,, Quote:-- If you replace disks, do both the drive and driven types need to be replaced

--That depends on the amount of slippage or damage incurred.. In most cases if the lined plates are burnt the steel plates will be warped & have bluing or purple spots burnt into them.. If therere damaged or warped they will also need replacing..

Do an adjustment on the PTO clutch & see if it still slips,, if so try a different PTO oil ( I personally like Deere Hy-Guard).. If you had (have) a premium quality modern motor oil in that PTO there is probably plenty of friction enhancers & modifiers in that oil & that can promote clutch slippage under sustained heavy load..

If it still slips suspect burnt plates or sacked out clutch engagement springs due to the heat of slipping..

Slipping can be adjusted out. There is no way to inspect and I wouldn't preclude they are not adjustable. You can change fluid and adjust per owner's manual or IT or JD service manual. I would try to explain how to do this but would be very lenghtly to explain. You can see by books how to do this. I've had this problem and can be adjusted.
