using a tachometer on unstyled A

I have purchased a tachometer but I'm not sure I'm using it correctly. It's a digital type with the laser and reflective tape. I cut about a 1/2" piece of tape and applied it to the outside edge on the end of the crankshaft on my unstyled JD A. When I crank the engine and hold the tachometer about 1 foot away, it gives the reading, but goes up and down. I haven't noticed the engine surging or not idling at a consistent speed. Is there something else I need to do in order to get correct reading? Thanks in advance.

1951G, you probably will have better results if you put the reflective tape on the pulley cover near the center of the pulley. Quite often if you put the tape where you placed it and use the tachometer in bright sunlight or any other kind of light the light will reflect off the pulley and give an erroneous reading. We use this type of tachometer at our tractor pulls and this has been our experience. Hope this helps. Mike

Thanks Mike. I put the tractor in the shop without any lights turned on and moved the reflective tape to the outside of the flywheel. After doing this, I did get a consistent read.
