What could be causing this tractor's front wheels to turn to the right when the tractor is just sitting at an idle? Thanks in advance for your help.

JonathanGPS, lots of things,, from a mis-adjusted steering valve,, to loose or worn sleeve pins,, to a worn steering sleeve slot,, to a bent or binding steering shaft,, to a pressure problem,, to nut that has come loose on the steering valve fork,, to end play in the worm,, to a helix screw that the end is worn on,, to ????..

We can eliminate some of the above if you can give us some history on your problem.. Like---

When did the problem start?

Is it worse hot or cold?

Has any work been done on the tractor or steering before the problem started?

Is it getting worse..

Has it always been there..

Can you stop it by holding the steering wheel in place?

Anything else you can add..

Those old Deere steering systems are quite complex if just guessing at the problem but not too complicated is taken one step at a time & eliminating certain events..

Tell us AS MUCH about that steering problem & its history as you can.

Clooney, The tractor was just purchased last week and we believe that it may have been sitting for the past twenty years. The tractor has not been run enough to get the fluid hot. To our knowledge no work has been done on the power steering. The steering wheel can be held and the wheels will stop turning and the tractor will steer left and right with no problems. The pump seals look like they are seeping fluid but not pouring from the looks of the crud and dirt on the outside of the pump. P.S. the tractor was bought from the origional owner. Thanks for your help.

JonathanGPS, in that case start with a simple steering valve adjustment.. Loosen the bolts shown & tap the entire valve in the direction shown (very, very, slightly)

Dont stand with your leg between the R/H front wheel & tractor as that steering can take quite a jump if that valve is slid too far..

Start there & see if you can straighten it out..

You might also install new steering oil,, if that thing has been leaking it probably has who knows what in it for steering oil.. Deere has special steering oil for those 2-cylinder tractors..

On those leakers-- I usually just use Deere Hy-Guard for steering oil until the leak is repaired,, then use the correct steering oil from Deere (Deere P/S oil is expensive)..
