I have completed electric system rebuild on an electric start 730. Rebuilt 24 V starter and generator, new regulator, new wiring harness, new cables, and batteries. I have wiring diagram and tractor is up and running, working fine. Previous owner installed ammeter in lower dash panel. Is a new black face JD gauge volt sensitive[ 6-12-24]? Where do I properly hook up wiring from and to ammeter? We know regulator is close by.

960, I guess I dont understand this 6-12-24 volt sensitive ammeter?

Is it just a 2 post ammeter or are there other posts or terminals on it?

If just a 2 post ammeter you can install it to read charging amps but not accessories loads,,, or accessories loads but not charging amps.. One is 12 volts & one is 24 volts so you cant mix them at the ammeter..

Explain that ammeter a little more & what you want to measure & we can probably fix you right up..

Clooney, this is probably as good of a place as any to ask you about the JD 2 cylinder electric systems service manual.....I believe it is 2920 or some close number. Have you seen one of these? Am guessing that this manual would answer the question here as well. It is supposed to cover electric systems on all 2 cylinder tractors. Have been thinking about buying one as I have a 730 ES and want to see some detailed information on the exact electrical wiring layout. Thanks.

CFWelles, I don't personally have the Deere electrical service manual..

You are correct in that there is (was) one though.. I do have a lot of Deere 2-cylinder wire schematics from the 2-cylinder era but not in one book though.. (stuff I have gleaned over the years)

One of the problems with the old Deere wire prints are ERRORS (lots of them).. In fact the Deere schematic for 960s 730D here has an error in it..

Deere was also known for combining multiple years of tractors in one wire print so if you dont really know your tractors the wire prints can show you something your tractor never had.. Just look back through the archives here & you will see lots of errors on advise based on those generic wire prints..

I have most 2-cylinder wire prints & in a lot of cases have re-worked them to eliminate errors (at least the ones I have found so far).. Are mine 100% accurate? NO,, but they are better than original..

If you need that Deere electrical service manual number I can look it up for you as I have a master Deere service manual book out in the shop.. There might even be a C/D out by now (much cheaper than a book)..

Im sure Duane Larson can supply the electrical SM number also as he is much better organized than I am.. (He probably also has one in his collection)

Thanks Clooney. I have a chance at one and will see if I can get it reasonably. Thanks for advising that not everything in print from Deere is gospel. My motive in all of this, is to work to restore the wiring harness on my tractor to as close as possible to original. Its pretty cobbled up as I received it from 45 years of use. Am hoping that this manual will show wire sise, color, and where the jackets are.

CFWelles, it won't show wire size or routing but will show most connections & colors..

Clooney what might that error be. I have a 59 and 60 730D and am working on the 1960. I know from the Delco book one starter was used in 59 and a diiferent post arrangement was used in the 1960 starter. As you know I have a few bucks in a complete electrical rebuild and would like to see it last.

960, give me an E-mail & I will follow up with you.. I have a lot of time into correcting those Deere wire diagrams & dont feel like making it public knowledge here, I hope you understand..

Thank you for your response. It's a two post ammeter same as would be used on a 12 V 2 cyl. All I want to know is how much the system is charging as I don't trust the red dash light.

960, you should be able to put it in either the white (gen) wire or brown (ret) wire {the brown wire from the generators (A2) post at the regulator}.. That is the 24 volt loop & should show charge only.. White (gen) wire would be easier

You could also install it in either the blue or brown wire at the starter solenoid & that will show a 24 volt charge & of the 12 volt dis-charge (I think)..

As far as polarity,, just install it & if it reads backwards just swap the wires post to post
