Manifold bolts leaking water

Thanks to all the post, i have about got my carb. working decent. Ran with disc today and warmed it up pretty good and two of the manifold bolts are leaking water. I put permatex first time and they seeped, so i put liquid teflon on them and two are still leaking. What has everyone had the best luck with sealing those threads. This is on a G. Thanks Ken.

IMHO I would first avoid using stainless studs or bolts in manifold applications considering what I've learned about stainless over the years. Any (read every time) I replace these I use only grade 8 cadmium plated bolts and coat the threads with copper based never seize compound. Make sure the bolt is long enough to thread at least 1 inch into the head. I always use anti-freeze in all engines, living up north, so I buy a tube of silver seal and mix it with the anti-freeze before I dump it in the radiator. Then I run the engine at temp for at least a half hour. I'm sure others have an opinion on this, but I've never had to do the job twice.

Hi ken, Clooney is right in that unless it is leaking alot, time will cure the problem. I too have run into threads that just dont want to seal on those manifolds. The heat is hard on the sealers so just pick a good one and go with it. Run the tractor and it will seal up before long. Good luck

Ken, it sounds like someone might have drilled the holes out a little oversized at one time..

Those bolts (the ones that enter the water jacket) are hard to seal as the heat involved with exhaust studs exceeds a lot of sealers heat properties..

I have had some luck using Loc-Tite PST as it is good for 400�.. It�s good for up to .020� gaps..

I have a few that wouldn�t seal even with a good sealer so in that case I make new studs using oversized threads.. That usually does the trick..

One good thing is: given enough time they will usually seal on their own due to rust. If you used stainless steel studs or bolts they might never seal correctly..

Studs seal best as they can be driven until the non threaded main shank contacts the cylinder head..
