I just bought a JD 500 series A Backhoe, its suppose to be the industial version of the 3020, I'm tring to find the serial number. On the Jonnypopper website is says it is located behind the transmission case. I cant find it, could it be under the consul? Any oppinons on the aftermarket tech manuals? Thanks, Ken

Hello Ken. I just aquired one as well, a 1966 model. The serial number tags are in two places. Rear of the transmission case at the upper center of it, hard to see with the backhoe on, but you can see it. Also located on the top of the left frame rail, right next to the starter. This one was missing on mine. I purchased an operator manual for the "A" series, and it was quite helpfull. Mine is not an "A" series model, it is just the early 500 model, so I have ordered the right manual from Deere. If yours is indeed an "A" model, I"ll just send you the manual I have. Even without the S/N, you can get a really good feel for which one it is by looking at the online parts diagrams at Deere. It lists each model (500, 500A, 500B) with complete diagrams. One easy way to determine which one is to look at the dash panel. Each model was quite different from the other as far as the dash, and I readily identified mine from that. If you go to>Link

Thanks Jim, I still cant find the number, do I have to take the floor of the cab off to see it? I will buy your owners manual, I do have the 500A, thats what the deacal on the loader says, (JD 500 Series-A).
I know what you are saying about them all being different, I bought a tech manual on ebay for the 500B, I paid a high dollar thinking it would be the same, just some things updated....wrong, its totally different, different engine, 12V instead of the 24V mine has. I need to rewire this thing, it doesnt charge, and looks like an alternater was installed in place of the generator. One thing that has me baffled is at the left of the starter button, there is a knob, I cant figure out what it is, it pulls real hard, maybe a compression release? Shouldn't have to remove anything to see it. I'll be up at our place where it is this weekend and I'll take a picture of where the tag is. Does yours have a "cab". Might be it obscures the tag as well. Mine also has 24v, and needs some wiring done. The 500 and 500a series definitely had a tag on the frame. There is a photo of it in the manual, and the mounting rivets are still on mine, just no tag. The knob you ask about...on the very left upper side of the cowling is a lever. When you pull out on that knob, you can then pull back hard on the lever. This disengages the hyd. pump for easier staring when really cold. Don't leave it disengaged long after you start though, hard on the pump. You need to pull on the knob to push the lever forward as well to engage the pump. I have not found I need to do this, as it just does not get that cold here in North Calif.

I also have a couple rivets with no plate on the frame.
There is a small removeable plate (about 10"X4")on the floor just in front of the seat. I removed it and no help.
I see there are tech manuals, but there is a different one for later serial numbers for the series A.
I have crawled under and over the area, I hope I dont have to pull the cab.

Hi, I just so happen to have a 500b and am starting to look for a manual. I recieved a 500c tech. manual and it is not my machine. Let me know if you would like to sell your 500b manual.

I don't think your tag on the frame by the starter is missing as I don't think they had any there.Your starter could of had it's own tag . The only tractor # tag is on the back.

My 510 JD Backhoe has two serial number plates just as Jim stated. One on the frame and also one on the rear of the transmission case just like a 3020 does. Both are their and readable. SJ

Never seen a 3020 4020 ag tractor with the serial number anywhere other than the rear trans. case.Must be something special for the 510 ind.? I had 2 500's and they both had it on the rear only.
