Still working on that dang G carb. One thing about it, i can take it off in record time now. I have to open the idle jet open four and half turns, and runs fine at idle, but when you speed up a little it gets very rich. Turn it back in about two and half turns to get running good fast, and then it's not enuogh to run slow, pops and sputters until you open back up. Does this mean the idle passage is still partly stopped up. I have a few small pits in the barrel where the butterfly closes, could those small pits be causing enough air to run around the butterfly and not making enough suction on the idle port. Does it have to be a real tight fit between the wall and butterfly. If i hone those pits out what do you do to get a bigger butterfly to close off tight. Thanks Ken.

Perhaps while Clooneys idea of the spray can / unlit torch is wandering around, wander near the shafts of the carburator also. I have seen a few rebuilds that they neglected the packings around the shafts. If this is the suspected problem after the spray can check, just smear a big gob of gun grease around it then fire the old gal up and see if it helps. Dave NE IOWA

Ken, you have either missed an idle passage, or the throttle plate isnt sealing very good due to plate wear or those pits (I wish I could view those pits), or you have something installed incorrectly..

Make sure the throttle plate is sealing good on both ends (throttle shaft area) & makes sure ALL the idle transfer holes are open, make sure that bottom hidden passage is open between the main & idle circuits..

If the carb seems ok then maybe you have an intake manifold vacuum leak.. If you have a leaking intake manifold or manifold gasket it could very well act like yours is..

Try using a spray from a can of carb clean or use an un-lit propane torch & probing all the manifold & gasket seams & joints with it idling as lean as it will stay running.. If the engine perks up you have found a leak..

Not proof of anything on the partly stopped up part. Just don't forget that the main needle affects the idle circuit somewhat as well, so instead of opening the idle screw to get a richer idle mix give the load screw a quarter turn open and see if that isn't the direction to go to get good running at both low and high speed. Sometimes you can get the needles so out of whack with each other it's a good days work to get them working together right again. I know all about that record removal time, I got so disgusted with it the last episode I took the carb out into the bright sunlight and took off my glasses - only then did I see that plugged up hole just big enough for wire from a wire brush to fit in.

I really doubt a few small pits in the throat would affect much and you could adjust for that leakage anyway. Tight fits tend to lock up so that's not advisable if you could get it that way. I'd leave that part alone and concentrate on adjusting both needles to get it where she runs right, that and double checking for those no-seeum micro ports.
