After getting the block off,I checked and the oil ring will be at least 3/4 the way out of the block. It dosen't look like it has been sleeved but the bottom the block is beveled in. Would it be possible to have some of the block ground off some so that the ring will not pop out? Would it cause a problem with to much compression? Will JD rings have a 1 piece oil ring? If not where could I get a 1 piece? Trying not to spend more than tractor is worth! THANKS for any advice!

jimmy-h, with that much of the oil ring sticking out of the block you will definitely need a one piece oil ring.. You could machine a little from the rear of the block but probably wont be able to burn kerosene in it then.. You will probably have to shorten the pushrods also..

You might want to check the rod bearings for wear as that can allow the rods to move back farther towards the crankshaft.

I usually just leave the block to case gasket out & use a gasket eliminator (no silicone gasket maker though)..

I have seen those Hs stack up with the oil ring pretty far back at BDC due to worn rod bearings, worn crank main bearings, & worn wrist pin bushings.

Thanks Clooney, Is the bevel on the block factory? Or has someone made a big mistake somewhere along the line?

jimmy-h, that chamfer on the back of the cylinders is normal but some seem deeper & more pronounced than others..
