I have inherited a 51 B from my grandfather and have got it running now. The lift would not raise, but I discovered that the powr-trol housing was empty, so I filled it and it worked for a while, then quit. It seems there is a leak somewhere, as the differential area is filling up with the hyd oil from the powr-trol area. as long as you keep oil in there it works. I talked with my uncle about it, and he said he remembered a long time ago, that a gasket went bad in there, and he replaced it to keep that from happening. I looked up the parts page for that, and is the gasket that goes where the cylinder bolts onto the rear housing the problem? Seems to be the only there that would allow it to leak into the differential area. Any ideas?

Thanks

Rusty

Rusty B, there are 3 different areas those B’s tend to leak Power-Trol oil into the rear gear oil..

The 1st is through the PTO inner pump seal---If it is leaking there the P/T oil will tend to leak out as long as the PTO is spinning whether or not the P/T lift is being used.. It takes much longer to leak if the pump isn’t making pressure though..

The 2nd is through the rockshaft lift cylinder to rear housing gasket.. That usually also allows the rock shaft (or 3-point if it has one) to not hold a load up & it will slowly drift down with a rockshaft load on it..

The 3rd is through the power-trol box to rear housing gasket near the pressure port hole.. (same symptoms as #2)

There could also be cracks or porosity in the rear castings but those are very rarely found..

Unless you want to re-seal all 3 places or pull the rear housing for nothing I would suggest you first..

Use the tractor for a while with the PTO spinning but no use what so ever of the rockshaft.. If it still leaks the PTO oil out suspect the PTO pump front seal …

If no leak found in the above test then place a load on the 3-point (if you have one) & see if it slowly drifts down,, if so replace the rear P/T box to housing gasket.. Then re-check for a slow drift down..

If it still leaks down then pull the rear housing off the tractor & install a new cylinder to rear housing gasket..
