Hi I was just wondering what the knocking that comes from around the clutch of a John Deere 50 could be my dad has one and I would think it doesn't have 20 hours on rebuild he had done it has never run exactly right just wondering if it could be a rod loose or something in the clutch I have Farmalls and I don't know anything about John Deere any coments and suggestions would be greatly appreciated

My Dad's 50 will occasionally knock. It had a corn picker on it most of its life before he got it. Seems the flywheel had gotten loose once, and now it needs to be tightened up every once in a while. It will knock through the clutch when that happens.

KYJoe, we really need more information from your end to give much of a diagnosis on that knocking..

Such as:

Hot or cold/ or both..

Clutch engaged or disengaged/ or both..

Trans in neutral or driving in gear/ or both..

What engine RPM does it happen at?

Always there, or sometimes gone, or sometimes louder?

Were any parts replaced in the clutch at overhaul time?

Just like going to the doctor & saying Im sick,, he is probably going to ask you some questions to help figure out whats wrong & where the problem lies..

Well this is all I know it seems louder with the clutch engaged but it does it engaged or not it does as soon as it starts and pretty much stays the same until you shut it off dont know if ever does it with the transmission in gear I will have to check on that and will get back to you THANKS for the quick response

KYJoe, the more information the better..

If it gets louder with the clutch engaged that usually points to a clutch driver being loose on the crankshaft splines or 1st reduction gear related..

A loose flywheel usually gets louder with the clutch released so pay attention to exactly when the noise happens in relation to the clutch engagement, or trans in & out of gear & tractor moving..

With the correct input from you on when it happens we can get pretty close to the noise origin..
