JD head light question

I have a 37 AR hand start. The fan shaft has a generator pully on it. Some of the books I have show these older tractors with the seven inch lights. Were these lights powered with just the generator or was there a battery in the system also? I don't think you can run the lights with just the generator, but I don't know for sure.
Thanks Much,
John

John, I dont show the 37 AR using a pulley on the original fan shaft.

If you have the later fan friction clutch, then the pulley could have been added when the friction clutch update was installed.

Deere did furnish an updated fan clutch & related parts kit for retrofit but I cant tell if that included a fan shaft pulley.

If you still have the original rubber center fan hub with a pulley added then I dont know what you have.

I have seen some light kits that used a 7 front light & a generator that mounted on the belt pulley side & used a drive belt around the clutch pulley but am not sure if that was an aftermarket type kit or Deere authorized kit.. (I have seen this mostly on the unstyled D).

My knowledge on the early AR /AO lighting is limited but dont believe Deere ever offered a fanshaft driven generator without a battery. (dont bet your farm on this information though)..

Good evening other John in Indiana, To answer your questions, YES there were some hand start tractors equipped with NO battery but only a Generator WHICH CAN BE USED TO POWER LIGHTS. After all, if you turn a DC Generator, she puts out voltage. However, with no battery and regulating circuit, they would glow bright at high RPM but fade at low RPM. If thats not acceptable but you still wanna run lights, I guess you could add a small lawn mower or motorcycle battery tucked away somewhere and rig up a Generator n regulator n lights and a switch.

Good luck Hoosier Neighbor,
