Steven M, your post from 3-21-2002 18:27:52 is not correct about the 55 combine It was not the first combine in the industry to have the center line design. In 1951 Baldwin Gleaner model A serial number 51A9001 was the firt in the industry to center the operator's platform, graintank, engine and gas tank, that was 1951. The 55 was introduced in 1959 serial number 52001. Just to set things strait. Good Day.

Don"t want to start a controversey here, but the first JD #55s with a centered operator platform were built in 1947, & introduced as "48 models. This info is taken directly from Don Macmillan"s "John Deere Tractors & Equipment" Vol#1. Mr. Macmillian was a John Deere dealer in England at the time,& imported at least one to England in 1948, after operating one in Illinois in the fall of "47.

Yea, antideere, aka Wheels, usually gets things wrong. I have many hours on an early 50s, 55 open station, with a Hercules OXD3 engine. It belonged to a neighbor, that I worked with. I bought a 1968,55 with a Ha217 JD engine, and a after market cab with a heater. That was living, warm and not much dust. In 1960 they came out with the HiLo, with a optioal cab, that you couldn't see the cutting platform when operating the machine.

Not sure he got us straight on whos who, but Ferdinand Magellan had a strait named after him years before the Gleaner.
