I was working on neighbors 49 B
started hard but took right off when pull started. Noticed left hand plug wire was on the bottom of mag cap. Checked the timing and it was OK took off mag turned it 180 and retimed with left wire on top, started great. My question is, is there a difference with were the left cyl. wire is ( 180 off on the cap)? is the point lobe timed differently between the left and right?

Jon, as Clooney noted, and I agree, theres theoretically NO DIFFERENCE in the non reduction gear drive mags such as the Wico C and X series that fire every 180 on BOTH the Power and Exhaust stroke sparks as far as timing (i.e. will run either way if wires reversed). And since they fire at BOTH TDC's and run the same RPM as the Crankshaft, they can be timed 180 out from the original factory setting (Top to left piston bottom to right) but a simple top n bottom wire reversal can make em run. The SAME Points and condensor and coil FIRES BOTH PLUGS

HOWEVER, there could be other differences and variables such as cam lobes,,,,,cap or rotor problems,,,,, ,,wire or plug differences or problems that could still make one spark better than another.

ALSO, while theres no theoretical difference, my ol Missouri Buddy ML Aylward swears up n down they run better if configured to factory original.

Good question, hope this helps, Good Luck n God Bless

jon-deer, no differences or firing off-set in the points cam to mag cap tower position on the standard Deere mags. They are a true 180 engine revolution apart.. Some of the old Volkswagen vacuum advance distributors ran the #3 cylinder retarded a few degrees from the other cylinders for heat concerns, maybe you are thinking of something like that

Thanks clooney I was just a little puzzled by the way the tractor started by switching the mag 180

You're welcome jon-deer, when you removed the mag & rotated that mag drive coupling 180 you could have improved the mag ground to the governor, or moved the ignition wires enough to improve their connections, or freed up the mag impulse so it worked better, or if the cap was removed allowed moisture to escape.. Sometimes just wiggling a wire will improve its connection. If the plug wires are running through metal tubes just moving them in the tubes can help if they were leaking spark to the tube insides due to cracked insulation or moisture..
