First, hold the external switch for several seconds. When using that switch, the hitch moves MUCH more slowly than when using the internal cab switch or hand lever. That's for safety. If it still doesn't move after holding the switch for several seconds, you might try pulling the diagnostic codes for the hitch control unit (HCU). That's done by removing the small panel on the cowl over the fuse/load center and installing a fuse in the diagnostic holder. I'd recommend borrowing a manual for the entire procedure, as you'll need it to decipher what the code is anyway. The procedure MIGHT be in the Operator's Manual. I couldn't say for sure. It's probably a fairly simple fix, and could easily be a faulty external raise/lower switch. Only problem is that the switch comes with a pretty good length of harness if I remember correctly. Since there is no mechanical linkage in those electronic hitch systems, problems (which are actually pretty darn rare) are pretty much always in the harness or electronic components.

Re: John Deere 4555 3 point problems in reply to G/MAN, 01-04-2005 05:04:19
Have a 3point problem also. The hitch does not respond to any thing. Talked to the local JD dealer and I'm betting they don't have a clue as to how to repair the problem. This tractor has had electrical problems in the past, namely the power shift didn't work. The 3 point went down when it was in the shed, as this unit was just purchased used maybe it didn't work when it was bought. Until it went down it was never used. Have checked and cleaned all contacts and plug together harnesses. All fuses are good. The wire that plugs to the handle inside the cab doesn't have any voltage in either wire. Is there supposed be current in one of the wires. This harness plugs into the sending unit that is connected to the cab lever. Any advice would be helpful.
Thanks
Felix
