Fan Fan Shaft Assembly - '39 B

I have the fan shaft assembly off of my "39 "B"(75600). The next step will be to remove the fan and shaft from the housing and tube. The fan is of the early type with a rubber bushing in the hub. Any suggestions/cautions in removing the fan from the shaft to avoid damage to the fan hub.

I understand the rubber bushing in the hub is no longer available. (don"t know if that is the correct name for this rubber part).

I plan to remove the shaft from the housing and tube, clean up the front bearing housing and replace the packing, etc. Any help with this entire procedure will be appreciated. Ken

Ken R,
The rubber hub "attaches" the metal fan/thin hub to the metal center splined hub which slides over the splined fan shaft. The fan/rubber/splined hub is a unit and MUST not be separated or loosened from each other. The front of the fanshaft has two valve-like keepers which catch in a groove in the splined fanshaft and fit inside the splined hub (next to the rubber). DON'T do anything to create pressure on the rubber, as if it starts to move either in the thin fan hub or on the center splined hub it will (sooner or later) loosen, move forward and get into the radiator. Tension is kept on the keepers by a spring inside the front fan casting, and the rebuild specs indicate the spring compression should be some over 100 lbs, so it is (or should be if the spring is good) not trivial to release the keepers and remove them by pushing down on the fan - particularly since you don't want to put your weight on the fan blades and chance bending them.

I took a piece of pipe (1 3/4 or 2" dia, about 2" long, don't remember but can look tomorrow) which just fits inside the rubber on the end of the hub and pushes directly on the end of the splined hub where the keepers fit. Then I drilled a large hole (about 1") through the side of the pipe to give access to the keepers with a needle nose pliers. Turns out my drill press is just the correct length to put the gear end of the fanshaft on the base and use the chuck to push on the top of the piece of pipe to push the splined hub metal (AGAIN, don't push on the rubber) down against the spring and release the keepers - then remove them through the hole with the pliers. Works pretty well for any rubber-hub fan I have worked on. With the keepers out of the way the fan/rubber/splined hub will slide off the splined fanshaft as a unit and the rest of the parts (spring, bearings, seal, etc.) then come right out for cleaning, including the fanshaft. Assembly is just the reverse process. Make sure you keep the parts in the order they are removed from the fanshaft.

Any recommendation about a fan safety retainer? I know a guy once told me if I use the old rubber hub to (I think) weld a large washer on the end of the shaft to prevent the fan from coming off and getting into the radiator.

Can't weld while the fan is attached or you will melt the rubber... Maybe he meant to drill and tap the shaft to accept a washer and bolt? Maybe it has been too long ago and I can't remember... I don't know... I know that for sure!

OR is it not necessary?

Jason,
Welding a washer on the end of the shaft would make it impossible (without grinding it back off) to remove the fan/hub from the splined shaft. But it would probably work for the intended purpose. I suppose another possibility would be to drill a hole through the thin fan hub/rubber/splined hub/fanshaft and run a pin or something through. But that removes the intended effect of the rubber - to allow some movement of the fan relative to the fanshaft during starting, etc. But I suppose you could make a slot rather than a hole, but that would also require a non-round hole through the fanshaft.....

If you are worried after inspecting the rubber, you are probably better off just replacing the fan with a modern one. I've seen the results of fans leaving the shaft and going into the radiator, and I don't remember any of them announcing it in advance.

Ken,

Thanks for asking this question, I would like to find out what is recommended on this one too. I was looking at the fan assembly today and thought, "I need to get into that pretty soon". My B is in the same vintage, 81291 and also has the original rubber hub.

I do remember a guy told me if I keep the old rubber hub to weld a washer onto the end of the shaft. If the fan did come loose it would prevent it from taking out the radiator... I guess there is a way to do it disassembled. I don't think the rubber would like the heat.

I have had the fan off of my 43B that still has its rubber mounted fan on it. If I remember right. It is held on just like a engine valve and keepers. It has two keepers that wedge themselves in the front of the fan on the shaft. Just be careful as you press, with your hands, the fan back and remove the keepers.
