Ken R, The rubber hub "attaches" the metal fan/thin hub to the metal center splined hub which slides over the splined fan shaft. The fan/rubber/splined hub is a unit and MUST not be separated or loosened from each other. The front of the fanshaft has two valve-like keepers which catch in a groove in the splined fanshaft and fit inside the splined hub (next to the rubber). DON'T do anything to create pressure on the rubber, as if it starts to move either in the thin fan hub or on the center splined hub it will (sooner or later) loosen, move forward and get into the radiator. Tension is kept on the keepers by a spring inside the front fan casting, and the rebuild specs indicate the spring compression should be some over 100 lbs, so it is (or should be if the spring is good) not trivial to release the keepers and remove them by pushing down on the fan - particularly since you don't want to put your weight on the fan blades and chance bending them.I took a piece of pipe (1 3/4 or 2" dia, about 2" long, don't remember but can look tomorrow) which just fits inside the rubber on the end of the hub and pushes directly on the end of the splined hub where the keepers fit. Then I drilled a large hole (about 1") through the side of the pipe to give access to the keepers with a needle nose pliers. Turns out my drill press is just the correct length to put the gear end of the fanshaft on the base and use the chuck to push on the top of the piece of pipe to push the splined hub metal (AGAIN, don't push on the rubber) down against the spring and release the keepers - then remove them through the hole with the pliers. Works pretty well for any rubber-hub fan I have worked on. With the keepers out of the way the fan/rubber/splined hub will slide off the splined fanshaft as a unit and the rest of the parts (spring, bearings, seal, etc.) then come right out for cleaning, including the fanshaft. Assembly is just the reverse process. Make sure you keep the parts in the order they are removed from the fanshaft.
