i picked up a 1929 D and it came with a Splitdorf 246C magneto. it looks slightly different than the ones pictured in the parts/maintenance manual i picked up. the mag is pretty filthy and one way or another it needs a cleaning, at the least. i'd like to start pulling it apart but i'm not sure how far to go before i do something i will need some crazy tools to fix. is a manual available for this mag anywhere? do the tin covers just come off when the screws are out of them, or is there a secret to removing them?

thanks,

andy b.

Andy, those aren't too bad to work on..

A couple of things to keep in mind..

Once the internal rotor is pulled out [even for a short time] or the horseshoe magnet is removed the magnet will have to be recharged.

Be VERY gentle when removing parts as things break easily & those Splitdorf parts are not only getting hard to find but quite expensive..

I do have some documentation on the 246C & have been through a few [not in a while though].

Just a word to the wise __ DONT FORCE ANYTHING..

This will do until Duane Larsen can follow up.. He has worked on many of those mags & probably has a set procedure worked out.. He is the go-to guy on the Splitdorfs..

If he doesnt follow up here you might give him an E-mail.. I do have some specs & settings on that mag if you need them just not all in the same place so it will be a look for as needed if you need something..

Clooney,

thanks for the info. do you have Duane's email address (if he doesn't post an answer in a day or two)? i unhid my email as well.

i do have a question. you mention not to force anything. i took the four screws out holding the top stamped metal cover on, and it doesn't come off. should it pop right off, or is it being held on by years of grime, or some other secret component? i guess my concern is one man's "force" is another man's "gently prying". same for the cover over the points. does that cover just pop off, or are there screws somewhere that hold it on? i'm guessing rust is holding it on, but i don't want to force anything apart.

also, the mag is currently together, and as far as i know it hasn't been apart since the tractor stopped being used. should the magnets still be somewhat magnetized, or will they go dead after several years? i saw the article in Gas Engine Magazine (i think that's where it was from) on building a magneto magnetizer and was thinking of building one in the spring.

a final question (for now), there are cast metal parts on this magneto and the front and rear pieces are cracked. can these be repaired, are repros available, can i cast some out of aluminum?

thanks,

andy b.

Andy, Duane's E-mail is

[email protected]

He is definitely the man to talk to on that Splitdorf.

Those magnets lose their magnetic powers slightly as the years pass.. No big deal to re-magnetize though. As far as building your own magnetizer, don't waste your time, I built one & while it will do enough to get a tractor running it is no match for a big original magnetizer.

On those cracked housings? There are parts out there you will just have to nose around.. Probably Duane can point you to the places.. I usually get my stuff at the major tractor shows as all the big vendors are there.

On those covers? I dont have a 246C in the house here & the shop is shut down for the night so I will have to get back with you on those covers.. I have done a couple of RVs lately & dont want to steer you wrong by remembering the wrong mag..

i'll do some poking around on it and email Duane. i guess i will also be keeping a watchful eye for parts at any shows i attend.
