I am looking for another tractor to help share the workload in the spring and use on the grain cart in the fall, probably 300hrs/yr tops. I have found an 8430 with 4000hrs. Have talked to the current and previous owners both of which are selling/sold this tractor due to discontinuing farming operations. Appearence is very good, good rubber/duals, quick hitch and PTO. We are not looking to pull the snot out of this tractor, it would be used on a 25' field cultivator, 21' disc and the grain cart. Asking price is $14000obo. I would appreciate any thoughts or opinions about this tractor.

I spent what seemed like about half of my teenage years in an 8430 and that is one heck of a tractor. As I recall, I think about the only problems we ever had out of it was related to the fuel system. It tended to "drain" itself after a day or two of setting and then you"d have to prime it again before starting. That"s kind of a job with the little priming lever pumping those big fuel filters full. Still that"s a minor inconvenience. Seemed like the AC unit needed charging every spring too. Never had any major engine/transmission/hydraulic problems in almost 10 years of use with a 24" disk, 13" chisel, wagons, etc.

The hours are definitely low on that engine, unless someone had worked it to death during that period. I think a major factor on the price would be the condition of the tires. Man, that"ll set you back almost the price of the tractor to replace all 8 of them!

BTW - make sure you have an electric fuel pump of some sort to fill it with. Hand pumping 150 gals in NOT FUN!

That seems like a pretty good price to me, especially with low hours, a hitch and PTO. The hitch and PTO alone add a fair bit of value and a bunch of utility to those 4wds. And the "84" models of the 30/40/50-series 4wds have the venerable 6466 engine and didn't have the engine problems some of the 8630s and 8640s with the 6619 engine had. As far as what you want to do with it, that 8430 will handle all of that with ease. I've spent a BUNCH of hours running an 8450 on a grain cart, and a small 4wd is just about impossible to beat for that job. Good traction, plenty of stopping power if you have to road it, minimized compaction with duals all the way around, and pretty darn manueverable. Any time you can get a 200 PTO hp (about what it should have if it's healthy) tractor with only 4000 hours for $14,000, you'd better jump on it.

Which years of the 619's that had the oil pump drive failurs and is it practical/possible to update an early engine? Which of the 30,40,50 or 60 series had the front chassis designs that made the 6619 a stressed structural member. And thus suffering crank, main web & gasket failures from twisting the block\heads?

I've never owned or driven one, but my neighbor has one he bought new, and I've never seen it broken down in the field and this guy uses his hard. If there was a humane society for tractors, his would all have been taken away.

There have been several major upgrades and modifications available from Deere and others over the years for this tractor. Others on here will know more about what those mods were.

I took a quick look thru the Farmworld and Agri-news. Saw 3 for sale. All over $22,000.

If you know the total history of the tractor that is important, the price seems high; but I havent seen the tractor,,we have had several 8630s and they are good when they,re good but holy snike,s when they take a dump, you need a fat wad of cash, just little things add up because of the time it takes to get to components, not just the engine;; I think you need to get it for about 5 to 6000 bucks,,,my 2 cents;;;;;;billy
