I just got a John Deere 60 LP that has a loud howling noise in the transmission/clutch when the clutch is engaged. Makes noise when moving in gear or when sitting idle as long as clutch is engaged. Pull the clutch lever back and stop the pulley and no more howling. What is the problem with the clutch? Is it the clutch bearings or something? If so I can just fix that by pulling the clutch and reduction gear cover and replacing necessary parts? Let me know what you think so I can quiet this thing down.

I would at least take the filler plug out of the first reduction cover and see if you can wiggle the gear from side to side. On an A in the shop the outboard bearing failed and/or (order) the splined shaft ate most of the splines out of the first reduction gear. It was noisier than I would like, but cetainly not a banshee.

I have found Lucas Oil Stablizer helps quit down those old tranmissions.

I would say the houling is from the teeth on the drive gear to the reduction gear. After years of usage the crown wears off the straight cut gears and leaves a flat contact surface which leads to a hi pitch wine or houl and the noise will increase under load. All these noise problems are generally wear and tear.

Should be no danger of any more damage to be done... just noisy.
