Some of those new 5000 and early versions of the 5010 utility tractors were no prize either. Of course Ford had the 6000 and IH anything with a T/A and most of thier final drives.

The worst I ever had was a JD 2010. What a gutless wonder! They had poor fuel economy, and a terrible pto clutch. I could never understand why JD put the hyd. controls up on the dash. After having them along side the seat for years on the 2cylinders, they put them in the worst place they could think of on the "new generation" tractors.

Forewarning-since I will try and document my answer this might be long. Happy Farmer, I think made in LaCrosse WI. Told by my father- A neighbor had one that was used on the silo filler. The day usually started with the owner cranking and the rest of the crew running with the belt using the inertia of the filler to keep thing cranking. In exasperation, one morning the owner said, "If I had a stick of dynamite I'd get at least on explosion out of it". The next day he was presented with a stick, but it was never used. Later they decided to pull it with horses. Only slow gears, requiring two teams abreast, one teamster suggested they straddle a nearby ditch. but they too chickened out. Another owner was taking his to the top of a limestone bluff near LaCrosse to crush lime. It required 3 men and a team, one driving the Happy Farmer, another driving the team lashed to the tractor with a hank of hay rope, since the tractor didn't have enough power to make it on its own. The third carried a butcher knife to cut the rope and save the team in case they had underestimated the total power available. Another collector recently remarked that it was such a bad tractor, at least one example should be preserved.

Well there just happens to be an example of the Happy Farmer display in the collection at the nearby old iron museum. It's museum tag alludes to that fact this was a particularly poor machine. Specifically it declares "This tractor made the farmer happy on only two occasions: The day he bought it and the day he got rid of it"

Pretty much says it all I guess!
