I know this was a topic of conversation about a week ago. I always thought that these flywheels cost over $700 until someone posted info on Allen Machine Works. I talked to Dave @ Allen Machine Works today. I am in search of a flywheel for a 70 diesel. The price he quoted was $525 plus shipping. We did not discuss the rebuild existing flywheel route because mine is cracked. He also indicated that he supplies several "dealers" with these taper-locs.

Has anyone had any experience with their product? It appears that he is the ultimate source of this product and everyone else is reselling them at a pretty good profit. Maybe it's just the initial shipping cost that drives up the price. It could easily cost over $100 to ship one of those to say Ohio which would make the dealer cost more like $675.

I talked it over with my uncle tonight and I will be placing the order in the morning. After 12 to 14 years of sitting, I can't wait to hear the old 70 run again. Maybe if I'm real lucky, the flywheel will arrive before Christmas!

I'm glad to hear you got ahold of Allen's. I posted a phone number awhile back and didn't know if it was still good. I think he supplies these to everyone else. I learned about him from my old neighbor who bought 2 from him and this must of been at least 20-30 years ago. I have used his product before and it is good.I even bought one of just the center tapered sleeves before and my cousin and I machined my own flywheel and made it to fit ourselves to save some cash$$$. I think Chester Allen is the guy who first thought of or invented this repair. Save some money and buy the same thing direct from them.

Mike M,

Thanks for the reply! I ordered the flywheel this morning and should see it by early next week. I am familiar with the taperloc flywheel, but I just didn't know what to expect from these guy since they were so much cheaper than any price I have ever seen. It appears that it is a cost savings related to buying direct and not paying someone else's markup and shipping costs.

Shipping on those is very expensive. That's one of the reasons I was able to save so much by doing one myself. This was on a 60 and I would of had to pay shipping both ways to have mine rebuilt.New ones weren't an option back then and still may not be on that model.

I did not even think about it until you brought it up. So ,no I did not and it ran fine afterwards I guess ? Might not change that much because you take the same amount out all the way around inside the center. I did pop off the ring gear and use that surface to chuck it up on,needed a pretty good size lathe,we used an old lathe and just set the compound to the right angle and just feed it by hand as this lathe had no taper attachment.
