Need some Sherlock Holmes work from you green guys and gals.

A neighbor of ours has a 4020 Industrial. Reportedly this is a very rare piece as only 10 were made and three are known to exist.

Our neighbor recently contacted JD about this. They were very interested and sent a representative out to get casting numbers off the tractor. JD made and sent a new SN tag to be put on the 4020.

Our neighbor and JD want to verify the three-known-to-exist number. So if any of you out there with some information to add, please post it. I offered to help out by posting the inquiry here along with a pic we have of the machine.

That 4020 Industrial is a hoss! Our neighbor call it THE BEAST. Go figure!

I have a JD600 Diesel powershift with a 740 Industrial loader. And Indydirtfarmer is right, of all the tractors I've owned, past, present and probably future, that one is my absolute favorite. It's uncommon enough to be a good conversation piece, big enough to do anything I need to do, and since it's basically a 4020 on steroids parts are easy to get id we break it.
Interestingly, I also have one with a bad engine for parts and it has a straight 4020 serial# tag.

It looks like everybody answered your questions!

The really low production numbers were the gas JD600 (4020 Industrial is the same thing), with only 11 made. Still only 840 diesels made, so not easy to find.

I don't know where that "3 to exsist" came from. No one can say things like that. More rare tractors come out of the woodwork all the time!

If possible, could you send the serial number to me so I can add it to my list of Survivors? Is it a gas, or diesel, etc.

Brandon,

You've got a point. Let's just say that there are 3 of the 4010 Industrials with gasoline engines known to be in the hands of collectors at this time. A more accurate statement.

Yep, good and plentiful responses here.

I hadn't given it a thought--that is, distinguish between a gas or diesel. Frankly, I don't know what it is.

I heard more about this tractor yesterday morning, and the owner wanted to cast a large net for more information about it. I should've followed my first instincts and find out a wee bit more about it along with getting better pictures. In my eagerness to help out, I didn't ferret out enough basic info before hopping on here.

BTW: nice website you've got. I've bookmarked it.

Joe. I know of one tractor here in Western New York. I will have to refresh the story on these tractors & try to dig up more facts. I believe the low production numbers are for the gas engine models. JR Hobbs was at the NY EXPO and did some research on it. I will e-mail with updates as I can find info. E-mail me if you desire.

I suspect someone is confusing this JD600 (which was what the "4020"-based Industrial Tractors were called), with the numbers of the "4010" Industrial Tractor with gasoline engines, of which only 10 were built, and as of today, only 3 are known to exist. It appears that only 11 of the JD600's were built with gasoline engines.

The deere production log from the Two Cylinder Club lists when and how many of the 4020 industrial and 600 models were built.

If it has a tag now don't let them take it off. Leave it original as you never know what the future holds.

Jump over to the "Kountry Life" portion of this site. (Near the bottom of the menu to the left) Give a shout for "New-Gen". He's got one that he seems to really like. They are rare, but not so scarce as just 3.....John

Go to www.weirddeere.com, a site dedicated to industrial versions of JD tractors. It shows the industrial 4020 (aka the JD600) production numbers at 851, produced from '64 to '70. Production of the 600 stopped in '70, while production of the regular ag 4020 continued until 1972. 851 producedmakes them quite a bit more common than if there were only 10, but that's still a very small percentage of 4020 production, and it's definitely a collector's item. The website lists specs, differences from the regular tractors the industrials were based on, etc.

G/MAN: thanks for the response and the link to that good website.

Hmmm...yes, 851 produced sure does blow the quantity of ten number out of the water. It appears that this thing isn't as rare as thought.

I'm getting this information third hand, although it's from a very reliable source. The 851 number makes me wonder why JD made a big deal (so I was told) about coming out to see this tractor and issuing a new data plate. Maybe there was a few of these JD 600s that came off the line without the JD 600 tag and were indeed tagged 4020 Industrials. I have seen this tractor personally only one time and can't recall seeing the model decal (if there are any on it!)

What I originally understood about this tractor was that 8 were made and 4 exist. I was told these figures were corrected to 10 made and 3 exist when our neighbor contacted JD.

Thanks again. I will pursue this some more.

It's hard telling how accurate the story of the Deere personnel is. Deere WILL issue a replacement serial number tag if the old one is badly damaged but still readable, or possibly if the old one is missing but the actual identity and history of the tractor can be determined beyond a doubt, such as if original sales documents and the like are available for a tractor known to be a one-owner machine forever, etc. And yes, a Deere aftermarket product support rep will come and verify the old tag, order the new tag and I believe they're supposed to witness the installation of the new tag and possibly take the old tag with them. The reproduction tags are like what's found on new machines - a Product Identifaction Number tag with bar coding and the model number/serial number.

How would Deere know (accurately and factually) how many still exist????? Parts of this story sound like it should be approached wearing waders!
