What attachments were built to use the forward PTO on the New Generation tractors? (I know the 4020 had this PTO shaft.)

I know there was a side mounted sickle mower, anything else?

Just wondering...

Deere was likey thinking that the front mounted European implements would catch on here. In Europe forage harvestors etc are mounted to a front three point rockshaft and driven off a mid or front pto. They think we are nuts here driving forward and looking back to see what is going on.

ON THE 3010 THRU 4020 SERIES THE FRONT PTO SHAFT HAD 1000 RPM SPLINES. HOWEVER ON THE 10 SERIES THE SHAFT TURNED THE SPEED OF WHATEVER WAS ON THE REAR 540 OR 1000 SINCE IT IS A SOLID SHAFT.

In 1960 John Deere introduced their new line of tractors. They called this series the New Generation. This is when they dropped the two cylinder design and began to manufacture 4 and 6 cylinder engines. The New Generation era includes the 10 and 20 series tractors: 1010, 2010, 3010, 4010 and 1020, 2020, 3020, 4020, etc. The New Generation project was kept secret until the the unveiling.

On some of these models there was a forward facing PTO shaft. It runs off the same clutch as the rear facing PTO but I believe is 1000 RPM only.

The forward facing PTO exited the transmission case below and just behind the bell housing. Just below your feet when sitting in the seat.

So there are two PTO's on these tractors; the normal one facing rear at the drawbar which is typlically switchable between 540 or 1000 RPM and the forward PTO shaft.

Hope this helps,

Jason

New Generation was the name given to the 3010 and 4010 tractors when introduced in '60. 3020s, 4020s, 4000s etc are also New Gens. These tractors have a standard front PTO located on the front of the clutch housing below the rear of the oil pan. It would more accurately be described as a mid-PTO, and uses a standard 1000-rpm small shaft.

G/Man I also have a 4010 diecel standard with no 3pt. but does have a pto. Does this tractor also have the front pto? Do all new generation tractors have both. If they do I never noticed. My first new generation deere.

I'm not 100% sure it was standard, but will say that having worked on several dozen 3010s, 4020s etc I've never seen one without it. I've got a New Generation book at home that I'll try to remember to look it up in and see if was standard or just an extremely popular/common option. The deluxe seat was optional when first introduced on the 3010 and 4010, but was ordered so often as production went along that it eventually became standard equipment.

We run a side mount #50 9ft mower, & also drove a sprayer pump when we used saddle tanks. Both work very well. I always thought this would be an ideal source of power for a front mount snow blower, but ours have all been 3pt mounted.

On the industrial models with factory loaders the loader had it's own hydraulic system. The pump for this system was run from the front PTO.

Which models would this be ? I had a model 500 industrial version of a 3020 with a factory loader and backhoe and it all ran off of the same hyd. pump as the rest of the tractor in front of the engine just like a 3020.

I've seen chemical pumps mounted on them in conjunction with saddle tanks for planting. The design of the PTO system made it very easy and cheap for Deere to include as standard equipment a front PTO shaft that was optional or not available at all on competing models. At least I'm assuming they were standard equipment, because I've never seen a New Generation 3000 or 4000 without one.

Didn't the front PTO run the 237 corn pickers mounted on New Generation 3000 & 4000 series tractors. An optional drive maybe?
