I know where I can buy a good 4620 cheap ,but it does not have a 540 shaft. Does anyone know if Deere made a 540 shaft for a 4620?

A 4620 was too much power for a 540 shaft in those days. They didnt have the resourceses to make it work good. Today its different

Mike M. is correct. It wasn't planned that a tractor that size would ever be used for tasks like running augers or baling hay, when there were smaller, handier and much more fuel-efficient models in the Deere line to handle those jobs well. Successive "big" tractors in the Deere row-crop line were and are also 1000-only, such as the 4630, 4840, etc. The 8000s can be equipped with a 540/1000 optional set-up, but why anyone would want a 165 on up to 225 hp tractor wasting it's time on a 540 shaft is beyond me.

I thought the 4620 was only 135 HP ??? I have a real big spreader that is 540 RPM.

You have to put that "only 135 hp" in the context of the time period. That was a BIG row-crop tractor in those days. 1000 rpm PTO-driven equipment requiring 135-hp wasn't too common in those days, let alone big 540 rpm iron. And then when the 40-series came out, the 4640 and 4840 went to the large 1000 shafts.

If the main drive is a chain, just reverse or replace the sprockets. Some equipment converts from 540 to 1000 just by unbolting and turning over the main gearbox. Then just replace the input shaft with a 1000rpm unit.

540 rpm is not very well suited to take that kind of horsepower.

It's more than just the shaft. If you could switch shafts to a course splined 540 shaft, it would still turn 1000RPM.
