I've been looking at a couple 2840's. Are they a good tractor? Anything I should watch for? What's the difference between a 2840 and a 2940?
Prices seem to run from $7500 to $9000.
Any comments will be appreciated.

Forgot to add look out for liner pitting from not having the coolant changed often enough,no different than any wet sleeved engine. An oil sample test may show this up early if it is happening.

We have a 2840 with 6000 hours on it. The 2840 was made in Mannheim....it has the 329 engine as the 2940 has the 359 engine. Ours runs smooth as can be ,but it starts a little hard in cold weather. The one thing about it I DO NOT like is the transmission. I don't know why but Deere put a 12 speed collar shaft in them.... so it's like you are missing a gear.... I call it having a 3 speed with rabit/turttle. The 2940 had a 14 speed top shaft synchronized transmission.....so you have 2 more gears plus it does not shift like a bear... Sometimes I wish I could put a 2940 transimission into my 2840. A 2840 should make you a good tractor.

The 2840 had a few minor flaws, like any other tractor.

It had one MAJOR flaw also....It tended to break in half! Especially when a loader was mounted on it. The 2940 was strenghtened at the engine/bellhousing joint. John

No loader in reply to Indydirtfarmer, 12-02-2004 07:20:52
I already have a loader on a 2520, so I'm just looking for a tractor for general chores like moving wagons and light field work such as planting, mowing, etc. It won't replace the 4020 or the 2520. How is it for that? Does it have a German engine?

I'm thinking the 2840 was a Dubuque engine/tractor. They weren't bad tractors, just a little "weak-wasted". A friend has one with 11,000 HARD hours (Hi-way roadside mowing) It's still alive and well, so they aren't all bad. John

I have worked on a couple and they seem good.I like working on them better than the smaller tractors as stuff is not as crammed in and that 6 cyl. eng. is really smooth. I ran a 2940 4wd and I really liked that tractor I could back wagons the best with it,you sit up higher and they don't steer as fast as a smaller shorter tractor like a 2630 which I always seemed to oversteer.
