Thanks. I really thought it was a 71 series. Would you happen to know when Detroit came out with the 53 series?? On the same note, I wonder if the engine in the Allis track loaders were also 53 series??? I'd sure like to have a 435 JD, but I'm lacking the funds!!! I've got a neighbor down the road who says they'd bale hay half the day (with the 435) and if they tried to pour a 5 gallon can of diesel it it, it would run out!!! Thanks again.

2-53 "S" series with the low compression 17 to 1 pistons. S35 injectors, high lift cam, two valve heads, no oil cooler, no emergency air damper shut off, no spray cooling to the piston bottoms. Pistons and sleeves can be scuffed if too much heat from larger injectors is encountered. Even when brandnew they need a block heater below 50F, a pull start or a very beefy starter and battery. I still can't find my GM and other service manuals since moving, but here goes. The "N" series was introduced in about the early 1970's with 21 to 1 pistons and high pressure/improved spray "N" injectors. Thee are also 19 to 1 turbo pistons out there and 25 to 1 military "crosshead" pistons. There are factory updates on the blower oil seals to reduce run aways, cam follower spring and valve spring updates as well. 2400rpm is max rated under load.

BuickandDeere, Thanks for being honest. I own a 435 & have owned several others & all of them need a shot to start when mild. I have been told by some guys that their 435s will start down to 20 degrees with no problem. If it is 70 degrees out mine will start with no help but I have to crank it for a good 30 to 45 seconds. Once it has been running it will start all day fine.

With the 21 to 1 compression and N series injectors, stock starter and a 875CCA battery. The 2-53 will start in 2-3 turns at freezing temps. If a big honking 5KW/7.5HP Iskra starter was used I'll bet she would fire at sub zero temps. The improved injectors and pistons gets rid of the exhaust smoke at idle as well.
