I had many problems with head gaskets leaking until I found "PERMATEX Copper SRAY-A GASKET". It is designed to be used on cylinder heads. I spray it on both sides of my head gasket, no more problems.

I have a head gasket leak on the "D" that I finished this summer. Water was leaking out the sides and out of the head studs around the THREADS. No leaks around the fire rings. It leaks during warm-up and cool-down but not when cold or hot.

Pulled the head and found water in the stud passages in the head and in the blind threaded holes in the block. Since I am in deep freeze country, this would likely have cracked the block / head.

I used sealer on the head gasket but have been told to assemble dry.

Turns out the block is flat to within 0.001" but the head is off around the outside edges by up to 0.004". I bought a machinists straight edge that is straight to +/- 0.0002".

I pulled the gasket apart and found out that the water had passed INSIDE the metal outer layers of the gasket.

Re-torquing the "D" requires removal of the rad, tappet case and push-rods. I am planning to gradually heat coolant and pump it through the block and head while I re-torque the head. I will cycle it several times to make sure that it has settled in.

A local ag repair shop here torques the head and then runs the block heater(s) over night and re-torques the next day.

Jones1, this is a common problem on this series of tractor, along with the 60's. I have posted my remedy for this before but will do so again. I normally do not use sealer of any kind on head gaskets but do so on these tractors. I use #3 Permatex and apply it on the outside vertical rails of the gasket on both sides. In other words, use it on the surface next to the spark plugs. Then torque the head in 10 ft/lb. increments until you hit 150 which is the recommended torque and then recheck the setting once the tractor is warm. Since doing this procedure I have never had a tractor with this series engine leak at the head gasket, including my 60 pulling tractor which has much more compression than your AR. Hope this helps. Mike
