When the magnetos went from a long lug to a short the degree / drive angle of the lug was changed. The long lug is referred to as a 35 degree lug and the short is referred to as a 25 degree lug. What this means is the old long lug mag can have the timing lag adjusted so timing spec. can be set with in the given slot mounting travel on tractor from anywhere from 25 to 45 degrees. On the short lug it can be set to about 15 to 35 degrees. Basically it is all about be able to achieve the timing ranges within the mounting slot travel of mag / governor mountings. A magneto can only be tilted so far to achieve timing setting due to the rotating slot mounting travel and even if you could tilt it further the gravity activated impulse lug would not catch on it adjustable striker latch. On my old unstyled pulling tractors that I retard the timing on from a 35 degree stock setting I do one of two things, either throw the governor a tooth off stock setting and use the old 35 degree lug or replace the mating drive coupling on the governor shaft with the later part and use the short 25 degree lug. Hope I didn't confuse the mater! Most unstyled tractor use the long lug and timing is set at 35 degrees advanced. The later tractors with the shorter lug is set at 25 degrees advanced. DW

Unstyled had long lug. Styled and later had short. Which one is better. Neither. Design change.

Not totally true. My 1940 B has a long lug magneto. I think JD went to the Long Lug Magneto on the 41 B's. Don't know about the other models.

I think you meant "short on the 41's"

That is how it was explained to me, simply. Might be some gray areas. Wonder what an unstyled AR made in the 40's has?

Thanks. So now it looks like 40 is long lug and 41 is short.

Ooops. I did mean short lug. I think any generality about long lug vs short lug related to styled and unstyled will soon be proved in error.

One thing that I have always wondered about, is, who changed what to make the other change? Did Deere change the governor and Wico had to change the drive lug? Or was it the other way around?

I seem to remember reading in one of the aftermarket books on the two cylinder books that the change was made due to a problem of wear. But I don't recall now what book that was.

What about the original FM 2b mag? It was for 36-38 a"s and 35-38 b"s and they werent long lug? Or the FM 2a"s on 34-35 A"s? Those tractors took a per say short lug. That means they went from short to long and then back to short as far as replacement mags. I have a FM 2b that some body thought it needed a long lug on, then they bolted it up and broke the mounting right off of the mag. So be carefull .
