Unstyled B clutch

Sometime back the clutch on my unstyled B started leaking oil. Took the clutch apart and discovered all the oil drainback holes were plugged. Also noticed the roller bearing was VERY loose in the housing. Machined out the clutch housing, pressed in a sleeve, bored the sleeve to fit the bearing and pressed the bearing in. Also made a collar to fit the crankshaft and put a rubber lip seal in outside the bearing. Put everything back together. The clutch hub did require a little "bumping" to get it fully back over the crank. I am not sure why it is tighter now than it was when it came apart unless it is because the bearing was pressed in. Maybe it isn't supposed to press in? Maybe I have to tight a fit on the press? Anyway, to make a short story long, the clutch is very stiff now. You have to hold pressure against the pulley brake to stop the clutch and as soon as you release pressure the clutch turns. If the tractor is in low gear and on flat ground it will even pull off. The clutch isnt adjusted too tight. Even with the clutch loose enough to slip if you ride the brakes it still drags when released. I am thinking the problem is related to why the clutch drum had to be bumped back on the crank shaft and not a clutch disk problem. Must not be floating freely on the shaft. Should I lightly sand the crank to compensate for the bearing being tighter than original? Sometimes I forget when building parts that a tolerance of .003" which is ok by today's standards is a "little" tight for a time when .030" was ok.

Thanks
John

John,
JD Field Service Bulletin 167 (Feb 1950) gives specs on the bushing ID and crank journal at the bushing. The bushing ID is 1.756/.002 and the crank journal is 1.747/.002. So, that is .009 clearance nominal - sounds like your bushing may be a bit snug if it is the .003 you mention.

Makes sense. One day I will remember that the old stuff is alot more 'loose' than the new.

John, the easiest way to tell if your clutch bearing or seal is too tight is to put the trans in neutral, then snap the clutch out of engagement, then give the pulley a spin.. If you can feel a noticeable drag that means you have something tighter than it should be..

~You talk about installing a sleeve for a seal just outboard of the bearing? That sleeve would have to then be larger than crankshaft diameter is it possible the seal has tightened up do to lack of lubricant. If that conical washer was reinstalled & the bearing greased its possible the seal is now dry.

~If the pulley spin test shows a tight pulley you will have to go back in & find out why.. If the pulley spins freely in the spin test you probably just need to adjust the pulley brake up tighter.. If the pulley brake isnt set tight enough to stop the pulley with just a little lever movement after release it will allow the clutch pulley to pull in too far before the brake stops the pulley & that allows the outer clutch disks to re-apply & start to drive as the hand lever is pulled farther & harder to the rear [common problem on the lettered tractors]..

Clooney,

The pulley brake is a possibility as I also made a bushing to go in the housing to get rid of some of the slop there. I dont think the seal is causing the drag. I put enough grease in there to last awhile. I hate to take it all back apart, but that may be the best thing. The fact that I had to bump the pulley on bothered me when I did it, but was trying to get ready for a parade and let it go. Figured everything would wear in, but now I have decided it wont.
