Hi folks,
Well, no sooner did I get the starter taken apart, cleaned, and working, than I hit a bad snarl of blackberries and suddenly lost steering. (Ie. the steering wheel turns, around and around, but the front wheels do not.) I moved the wheels manually, and then got a bif of loose steering back, but lost it again at the first bumpy patch. I had to drive back to the shed using the rear wheel brakes for steering: a bit nerve-wracking.
Anyway, something is seriously wrong, obviously. Immediate thoughts are stripped wormgears or broken linkage somewhere ... but in order to check it out I have to get the front panels off. They have no screws. How do I do it? And after that, what should I look for?
You all are amazing, and I'm someone here knows exactly what I need to do. The more I repair the old beast, the more fond I get. I just hope it doesn't require reassembling the whole steering assembly!
Anyway, thanks much.John

IF YOU GET REALLY EXPLICIT AND TELL ME EXACTLY WHERE THE BROKEN PIN IS I WILL GET YOU THE PART NUMBER. IT SHOWS UP ON THE JD SYSTEM COMPUTER.

HI, Not really familiar with the 40 S, But my 40t has a pin where the shaft hooks to the steering box. Could be as simple as a shaft pin worn off. Good luck.

When you get the hang of undoing those Dzus fasters that C Peter talked about and get the nose off, take the top plate off the top steering box and look inside - hopefully there will not be a pile of dry filings.

Then move the front wheels and watch the top of the shaft to see if it turns back and forth with the wheels. It is rare but the shaft may have given up. I have seen them twisted but not broken.

Let us know what you find after you go shopping in there and we can go from there.

Good Luck

Sounds like broken pin or pins in the sector of the steering box. they are available from Deer and the price is not too bad, About $15.00, I think.

The from is held on with quarter turn fasteners.

Thanks, all three of you. Well, I realized I had to take off a bit more than I thought -- got stuck for a few minutes before taking off the heavy solid steel front block (?) -- but then it all came easy. These machines are beautifully simple and easy to get into! Good for a mechanical novice, like me.

Anyway, opened the steering box and it was, as predicted, the pin in the wormgear groove. Great! No massive structural damage. Just a totally worn down pin.

But I went on to JDParts.com and couldn't find it. How do I find the part number? Can I get the pin online, or should I drive over to a dealer somewhere (would they even stock it?)?

Thanks so much for all your help! Now I have to check into some of those posts about how to get the battery charging again...

Any advice on the pin would be great!
John

I don't have the parts book for that one, but if your local JD Dealer is like mine, the parts man would have no problem looking it up in the puter and ordering it. Hope he ain't a bunch of miles away.

After you get to know the folks and they know you (that takes the bucks lol) you can probably order on the phone like I do.

Good Luck

Well, it was a lot more than $15! $37 in the end ... for a tiny little stud. Anyway, I've got it now; my further question (of course) is whether there's an easy way to reposition it. I can lift the vertical shaft, giving enough space to take out the broken stud, but can't seem to find enough space to insert the new one. Is there a trick?

Thanks so much for all your help!
John
