....can the white powdery corrosion that forms on my battery posts be neutralized with a solution of baking soda and warm water?....and if so, what steps can I take to prevent the corrosion from coming back?....time to start going over the 730D in preparation for it's winter work schedule.....opinions/comments welcomed.....
Good luck to all!
Bo

Baking soda works better in hot or warm water. Rinse all the soda off or it will corrode again very fast.

DO NOT let any soda get into the cells, this is a battery killer. Older batteries used to have a raised lip around the holes which kept the soda out but new batteries do not have this---be careful.

Remove the clamps from the terminals and clean with a wire brush inside to clean, shiny lead. Do the same to the battery posts. If you don't clean them your work will be all wasted. Then apply whatever protector you decide to use, I use Corrosion X which is for airplanes but lots of things will work, they must be heavy enough to stay on the meta. WD40 and other thin sprays like it will not last long.

While its true that grease or oil or vaseline etc prevents oxygen or acidic outgassing vapors to come in contact with connections to prevent corrosion,,,,, ,I prefer the commercial sprays cuz I fear the oil or grease could eventually penetrate the metal to metal bonds and its not a good conductor which can cause problems. I also used to coat everything with vaseline petroleum jelly or grease etc and it indeed does stop corrosion (cuz it seals out oxygen and vapors) but I think the commercial red type of sprays are better as they coat plus may not bleed down into the surfaces as bad. Any other opinions on this opinion????? ??

After a good cleaning, most anything that will completely seal out air will work, grease, Vasoline, oil-base paint. On my tractors cars and pickemups, I hit the terminals with a shot of sprayed on cable lube grease. This is the same stuff used to lube the lift cables on big cranes and cable winches. I also use it to lube the corral gate hinges. It quiets the squeeks and doesn't attract dust and grit. Lasts for two years or more, but man, is it messy if you arent' careful !! On the other hand (I have four fingers and a thumb ;] ), those little red and green discs work pretty darn well for a couple of bucks with no mess, no fuss.

Bo,

I have found the red battery terminal spray to be fairly effective. The anti-corrosion washers seem to work well also. A little baking soda and water will neutralize any acid on top of your battery.

Bo

I agree with John. Some of the best snake oil spray on for the terminals that I have been around is the stuff that came on my 99 Ford. It was black in color, sprayed on at the factory and lasted for something like 4 years without any attention.

Here lately, I have been using gun grease and think it works fine. The only drawback I see to grease is that it surely attracts the dust and anything else flying thru the air. But what the hey, if you don't let it get to you it won't hurt anything lol.

Bo, regardless if only water or whatever you use its a good idea to clean that powder off all the connections and terminals. Ive heard of and even tried baking soda and coke plus other witches brews lol. Some things to check are to give the battery a good trickle charge now and then over the winter to keep its state of charge up (or store the battery inside where its heated and/or up off any concrete floor),,,,, ,insure electrolytes above all the plates and that no cells have a gray or milky apprearance,,,,, after cleaning and wire brushing ALL terminals and ends and connections and powder removal, a spray/coat of that red lookin battery terminal protectant will help prevent oxidation and corrosion over the winter. NOTE sometimes if a battery has a bad cell or is overcharging the outgassing can cause corrosin and powder etc.

Good Luck n God Bless

What does it mean when you have a couple of cells that have the milky-gray look, have a battery thats 1 year old and 2 cells have that milky-gray look, its in my camper and its put away for the season, I also have a disconnect switch that I put on it so all power off. Thanks Don c
