1937 AR Steering Box Question.

I want to replace the Timken bearings in my 1937 AR steering box. The problem is the bearings inner race looks like they are part of the worm gear. This does not seem like the way to make a gear, with the bearing being a part of it. I just don't want to destory it without a repair plan in mind. Anyone changed these bearings before?

Thanks for any help you can give.
Michael

Any of those worm gears I have seen have the inner race as part of the worm. Only the outer race and the bearing is replaceable. If your inner races are damaged real bad you may be able to have a machine shop build them up and turn them back to size, may work for slight use as it won't be as hard. Or they may be able to come up with some inner races by size and machine your worm to accept them.

Once again Thanks Mike.

The steering shaft is 7/8 of an inch, I decided, I'm going to plunge grind the inner bearing race down to one inch, and then press new bearings over the old race. I'll have to make a filler sleeve to make the outer race fit, but I think it will work.

Did you find some kind of a NORMAL bearing by sizeing it up ? If you have access to machine shop equipment you should have no problem makeing a filler sleeve for the outer race.

I,m going to use a Timken 07100 cone, which has a one inch bore. Then with a Timken 07196 cup the OD will be 1.968, well under the now 2.186. Put the two togather, and their real close to the now .513 width.
