I have located a 4440 with hydraulic front wheel assist with 3950 hours on the hour meter. Power shift transmission and 18.4-42 tires. Asking price is 25,500.

I mainly want the powershift transmission, the under 4000 hours and the 18.4-42 tires.

Any comments on the hydraulic front end. Is the hydraulic front end dead weight and prone to having leaking hydraulic motors?

I would consider removing the hydraulic front end and replacing with regular front end.

Where is the second hydraulic pump located on this tractor? Any ideas on the turning radius of this front end for 30-inch row crop tillage?

Thanks for any comments on this front end.

I am considering purchasing a 4440 with HFWD. I would like to know more about the hydralics:

How effective is the hydralic assist compared to the mechanical FWD on other models? Will the hydralics require early repair/replacement.

Is there less clearence under the front axel for row crop use?

Should I just consider a 2wd tractor instead?

David,
I don't know where you are located, but there is a 4440 PS with 3734 hrs with 18.4-38 tires in Seward, NE for $21,500. Also one in Winner, SD with 4200 hrs, same tires, same price. Just for your information, I have heard that parts are all but impossible to get for those hydraulic front wheel assist 30 and 40 series JD's.
Good luck.
David

the hfwd front axle is stronger then the regular convertible axle. turning radius is almost the same as regular axle. of course the hydraulics of the front axle are prone to eventual leak. you can remove many of the hfwd compnents and use the axle as regular (not drive) axle, thus reducing the chance of leaks.
