I am restoring an old style JD 2 1/2 RC 1501 Hyd. Cylinder (The old style with the stops on the outside). I have a few questions. About how many shims (Gaskets) should I install between the cylinder body and the chevron retainer? The adjustable stop rubs slightly against the cylinder rod when it is 2/3 extended. Does anyone know any tricks to keep it off the cylinder rod. I drilled it out to 1" in diameter, it helped a lot but still just touches. Or were they all that way? Thanks.

It has been a long time since I have rebuilt one of these. I have noticed on most of them that the chrome is worn off in one spot from rubbing in that stop. I would guess that you would install enough shim/gaskets so that you could still move the rod in and out by hand but tightly. If it leaks in use you could remove some and tighten it up more.
