JD 4010 LP fuel. Need a wiring diagram to convert generator to altenator.

The 4010 gas and LP was 12V positive ground from the factory.
Yes that $39.99 Delco 10SI negative ground alternator at NAPA is tempting when the generator needs work.
Problem is after hours of facing a tangle of mysterious wires is frustration and time lost that could be doing something else. And often sparks and smoke too. Then trying to line up the belt belt perfectly is a chore. That generator looks better and better. Generators work fine if the regulator is set to 13.8 to 14.2 volts. Often the pulley is worn and the belt glazed, no wonder it won't charge. Then there are those who start the tractor three times in five minutes to get from the shed and through a gate. No wonder the battery gets run down. Idling for a few minutes and running the tractor fast enough to charge isn't going to break a farm operation with extra fuel costs.

Yes you're right. I had a 4020LP and now have a 4010 Diesel. I could have sworn that both had 24 volts till you said what you said and started me thinking.

The guy I sold it to is right down the hall. I got up and started his way to ask him how many batteries were on the side of his tractor and I remembered buying my last battery for it from Wally World; a big honker (31 I think) with threaded studs on it rather than lead studs.

So all my advice is just confusing on this post and the later one. I'll correct it now. Thanks.

My 4010 has a 24 volt starter, generator, and regulator. Only 24 volt alt I know about is on a HUMMVEE.

Lights and accessories are split; one side on the - wired 12v batt, other side on the + wired 12v batt. Two batteries together = 24 volts.


Sorry, but this tractor is not that simple.

I cant send a wiring diagram,since I dont know how.dont think I have enough stuff.If you are using a delco alternator-remove the black and blue wires from the oem voltage regulator.hook the blue wire to the main power terminal on the back of the alternator.you should have a new connector that plugs into the side of the alternator.all the ones I have ever bought have a red wire and a white wire.hook the black wire to the white.hook the red wire to the back of the alternator,with the blue.since the black wire circuit runs thru the charge light,then the system should work correctly.if the engine will not stop with the key,you will have to install a diode in the circuit.look under-RESEARCH & INFO the left side of the page.
