Ok heres the deal,brother boss man asked me if I d rebuild the engine on his 52 M.Having never ben inside a JD before iwas a bit leary whe nI said yes.He has the manuals I would need,supposedly.So tell me,and be honest,how simple,or difficult will this job be compared to the Farmalls I am good at?Thanks!

I rebuilt my M myself and it wasn't a bad job. Mine was siezed up with water and I was able to free it up, clean the bore and not have to have the block worked... I broke the tractor completely in half and replaced clutch and all. With the proper tools and hoists, you should have no problem. I'm not very mechanically inclined and did it following directions and specs in the manuals...

It should be half as easy as you only have 2 cyl. not 4. Seriously these engines are not that different than others. They are not sleeved so if the bore is worn out you will have to pull the block out and take it to a machine shop to get bored oversize and if it is too far they can install sleeves to bring it back to standard.You said you have the books just use them,they should give the torque and other specs.

He says its got a rod knocking,but I havent heard it yet so I really dont know what could be wrong with it.Im a pretty good wrench myself,not bragging,and I have looked at it as you said,half as many cylinders!I have been wanting to add a green one to the barn,and have thought about an M,maybe Ill just buy it from him,naw,wife wouldnt let me spend the money.Seriously,thanks,I bout fiqured it was pretty much the same!
