I have had the good fortune of not needing any transmission work on my 720, but a friend of mine just got one with shifter problems. I have seen the shifters jump out on these before, but have never done surgery. This one seems to jump out of it's slot and lock in two gears every time you move from one side of the quadrant to the other. It's a real pain to get back into place. I am just looking for "the voice of experience" on this one. I know that many 20 series owners have dealt with this before.

From looking at the tech manual and the parts catalog, I am assuming that we have a worn out shifter. Maybe it's a combination of the shifter ball and the socket that it goes into being worn too much. If I pull the top off of the transmission and find that the "socket" is worn, can it be replaced without major surgery? This is for a teenage girl who is nowhere near financially capable of major repair. The tractor is more of a toy than anything else right now and we just need to make it usable.

I don't read any mention of a gas or diesel ? A gas tractor will be easier to get to the shift fork to remove and build up the worn spot and check the adjustments on all of them. In the mean time try to slow down your shifts and see if you can feel for the lever moving the fork and if it doesn't feel right go back and run it through again.
