Im looking at a 4230 & wanted any positive or negative comments on this tractor. I know it has about 100 hp. What size disk could I pull with this tractor? Thanks

I have a 4230 with a soundguard cab and syncro trans. I was looking for a 4020 and founf this cheaper. Mine is has a 4430 turbo 404 engine in it. So it has about 125 HP. Great tractor, only thing I dont like is hard starting below 40 degrees out. Their is a preheater kit for $630 from deere available though.

I"ve got an early 4230 that is a good tractor. I pull a 12 ft disk, 10 tooth chisel plow, and a 5x18 IH moldboard plow. The disk could be 2ft wider, the chisel plow is about right, and the moldboard plow should be a bottom smaller. I too like the wet perma clutch and quad range which are the main advantages over a 4020. What I don"t like is that it is very hard starting. I"m told by a trusted JD mechanic friend that it"s the nature of this model since new and that a complete rebuild with updated engine parts and rebuilt fuel system may help. I"m not about to spend this kind of money as once started it runs like a top and doesn"t use oil. JD does have a $500 12 volt heated intake that is supposed to help them start but I didn"t try this yet as I couldn"t get any feedback. When it"s cool I make sure this tractor is parked near an outlet with the block heater plugged in. Locally a 4230 will sell cheaper than a 4020 as the 4020 is collectible and can pull in some classic tractor pulls. 4230 isn"t collectible, is too small for the big guys and too big for the hobbyists.

I'm in Jackson. You must be almost in Iowa!! You dont happen to know of anybody in your neck of the woods that has a 4010 diesel that they would have bought on a sale south of Jackson in about 80' would you? I'm looking for my grandpas, it would have a low serial # (1961) It was the first one that the JD dealer got in and he bought it new. I know its south of worthington somewhere but haven't got any good leads yet.

By the way, since it has been overhauled, it will start at 15 degrees with no ether.

N.E. Ks about 70 miles W of St. Joseph MO on HWY 36. Like to have $20,000. I know you can buy them cheaper, but you will look a long time to find one better than ours

I have a 4230 and a 4020. I haven"t pushed either one with mowing and hay work so can"t comment which one has more guts in front of a disk. Here are some comments and observations:

4230 burns more fuel than the 4020. The 4020 is at least a 1/3 more fuel efficient. I don"t know why either, they both have the 404 cid engine and tuned to about the same horse power. I guess it"s in the injection system. Can anyone shed light in this?

I do like the quad range transmission on the 4230.

4230 has a wet clutch.

Has the sound guard cab which is great in hot dusty fields.
