Difficulty in Removing Clutch Disk Drive - '39 B

I am looking for suggestions for the best method to remove a stubborn clutch disk drive on my '39 "B" - serial no. 75600

The disk drive is badly cracked and will have to be replaced so any further damage in removal will do no harm. I have put a good deal of pressure on my two-jaw puller which grabs the disk near its center but the drive won't let go. Note that early disk drives do not have threaded holes to facilitate removal. A puller must be used. There are two notches in the disk drive which allow the puller jaws to get behind the disk for pulling. Suggestions will be appreciated.

Ken,

The method described by WTW is recommended in the model B operators manual. I used it easily and successfully yesterday on a 1936 B. There is a note; "Caution: Revolve pulley so that ends of bolts do not rest on swedged head of clutch cone drive pin when bolts are tightened."

Thanks for the suggestions. I was able to remove the drive disk with the instructions provided by WTW and David D. Two 1/2 inch cap screws and square nuts in the two slots in the drive and a couple of turns and she broke loose.

Ken, To remove the driver use two 1/2" forcing screws with a 1/2" square nuts in the two hole provided. The holes are across from each other and are large enough to put the nut through it and slide over under the slot. Tighten bolt against the pulley evenly until it pops off. Not hard to do just do it the way it was intended as you will have much more forcing powered with two 1/2" bolts pushing evenly. The best part is that the driver is tight and you have a good crank spleen to work with! Good Luck, DW

Just completed replacing the clutch disc drive on my JD 70. In the process of using pullers, heating and banging with a large sledge hammer I broke the clutch disc drive. Wound up with a cutting torch and very very carefully I cut ALMOST to the shaft splines and then used a chisle to finish breaking it loose.

This worked for me and I did it only after trying every thing I could think of and every idea suggested on this site. Be real careful not to damage those splines on the crank shaft. God Bless JM

tighten up your puller as tight as you can then hit the end of it with a large hammer to give it a shock it should pop off. If it still won't budge heat the disk hub with the puller attached once warm you should hear it pop.
