44 JD Model B

I've been restoring this tractor for the past two years. 1944 B handcrank, I have an intermitant smoke problem I havn't been able to track down. It has a fresh rebuilt engine just bored to 45 thousands over with JD pistons and rings. The head was rebuilt. The carb and magneto was rebuilt by Robert's Carburetor. The color of the smoke is a blueish gray. If I run my finger on the inside of muffler it is wet black.
I was finally able to start it up for the first time a couple weeks ago. It smokes every now and then not all the time while idling or on flat road. I thought I would try and pinpoint the problem by seeing if it was just one cylinder. While idling, I pulled the spark plug wire off the left cylinder while it was smoking. As soon as it started running on just the right cylinder the smoke cleared right up. I ran it for over an hour without any smoke on just the right cylinder. I prematurally thought I had a problem with the left cylinder since the right ran fine by itself.
I put both spark plug wires on and waited until it started smoking again. I then pulled the spark plug wire off the right cylinder and something strange happened. While running on the left cylinder only, it also stopped smoking.
Recap smokes intermittantly while both spark plug wires hooked up. Does not smoke at all if it runs on either the left or right cylinder alone.
I have readjusted the tappets, ran through 3 different temp range of spark plugs.
Any help appreciated.

Thanks for all the input. I have only ran the engine for a few hours most of that idling. I had put in 30w Penzoil. I'll be stopping by John Deere to get some break in oil. Then I'll run it under load for a while, hopefully I can get the rings to seat.

Sounds good. The manual states for breaking in the rings, 10W oil. Real thin. The break-in oil will work good. Run it at full for 10-15 minutes then idle, then half. Vary the speed, or give her a good work out.

Good luck and have fun:-)

I agree with the other guys, you have to put a load on the engine to get new rings to seat.

I am with the other guys, needs to be broken in. What did you use for oil? Use Deere break in oil. It helped with my 43B

If you had the head redone with new valve guides, etc, and the cylinders properly bored and honed, rings properly installed, I would say that the ole B just needs to have a good workout to get her broke in. I, too have a '44 B that was bored out with new pistons, ect. It smoked pretty good for a while until the rings got good and seated. Also, if your climate is a little cool like it is here in KS right now, you will have some wetness in the muffler until the engine gets up to temp. Over all, don't think you have much to worry about.
