1944 JD Model B After I have started and warmed up engine I can pull the spark plug wire off the left cylinder and it runs fine on the right cylinder alone.
With both spark plugs attached, I can open the compression relief valve while engine is running on the left cylinder and I get the normal exhaust gas.
When I open the compression relief valve on the right cylinder no normal exhaust gas, there is no explosion of fuel.
If I pull the spark plug wire off the left cylinder, the tractor will then start running on the right cylinder by itself. I can open the compression relief valve and now it has normal exhaust gas.
Robert's Carburetor rebuilt my carburetor and magneto. I have readjusted the valves to make sure they were not to tight. It has new spark plugs and wires.
Anyone ever heard of this?

My B done the same thing until I put a 1-20 lpow behind her 10" deep in heavy clay. The front only touched the tops of the weeds the hole time it was in the ground. Have a blast and enjoy as all have said!

Sounds like a typical 2 popper with a single barrel carb to me. Hit and Miss, The harder ya pull them the less they miss.

I have a freshly rebuilt B that was manufactured in 1944 that does the same thing. There are several factors contributing to this, but the bottom line is that this behavior is quite normal.

Sounds normal at idle. Under load he should run evenly on both cylinders.

Enjoy,

44B,
Have you done a compression test yet? Are these symptoms just during idle? It's not uncommon for both cylinders not to hit at idle. The #1 cylinder is the dominant cylinder 'cause it hits first, then #2 fires 180 degrees later. There is a certain amount of "unevenness" in this system because of the design of the manifold, the single barrel carb, & the firing pattern. This isn't the case with the newer tractors with a duplex carb, where each cylinder has it's own fuel supply.
