'44 JD B Timing

I am having trouble getting the timing set right on my hand-crank '44 JD B (#158xxx). I have it firing just a little past top-dead-center (TDC)(flywheel is lined up just past horiz with timing mark). But to get it there I have to rotate the magneto (Type X) as far left as possible. If I place the magneto housing vertical, the timing is WAY past TDC. I am wondering if the whole housing is off a notch. I tried to remove the housing from the governor but could not get it off (the service manual is not clear how to do this).

Is it normal to have to rotate the magneto this far and since I am not quite at TDC should I keep trying to get it right?

Can anyone explain how to get the housing removed so I can set the magneto at the firing point, set the flywheel at TPD, and put the whole thing back together again?

Thank you very much for any advice,
KEG

KEG,
Sounds like you may have an impulse stop ring which is not properly located. If you do a search for "wico x question larson" (don't include the quote marks) you will find some discussion about the proper way to go about timing an engine for both running and starting. If you cannot adjust your magneto timing properly, the solution is to unbolt the governor case and move the governor shaft drive gear one tooth on the gear which drives the governor shaft.
