GPower, or anyone that can help me - I understand that you had to do some work on your 70 D because something was not alowing the fule rack to open completely. I need help! My '58 820 has the same problem. It's in excelent shape but only dyno's 50. When you look at the rack it only shows between 4 and 5. Should be 12.5. I have turned the rack adjusting screw out almost all the way but something is still not opening the rack. Local JD dealer won't touch it! Please help!

John,

If you are backing that screw out all the way, as you say you are, and it is still not opening up, it sounds as though you could have some problems with the rack on the pump sticking. I doubt that though, but it is possible. The other item to check would be where the throttle adjust on the side right behind the flywheel. There is a speed control rod there, and fast idle, and stop adjusting screws. Make sure you are getting good travel there. Just back the fast idle screw all the way out, and with the tractor off see if the racks will open up more, when you have the throtle pushed all the way forward. What is your fast idle RPM? When the tractor is off, the governor should allow the racks to open up fully, or as much as is allowed with the set screw.

The R-830 adjust differently than the 70-730, there is no eccentric on the governor. Same theories for both, just done a little differently. If you have any other questions, just drop me a line, I"d be happy to talk it over with you. [email protected]

Thanks

Garry

I can't remember if an 820 has the same adjustments as a 720 ? The 720 has an eccentric bolt in the center piviot on the governor arm going to the pump. You are able to adjust this to gain travel on the rack. The John Deere service manual explains this an I&T may also.

Thanks for the info. If it's in the JD service manual I can't find it. It looks to me like their governor related adjustment proceedures are very vague. The only straight forward governor adjustment looks like it is only for setting the idle speed. Is there a different type of manual that I need to look into?
